The early frontier in American History is one full of various events, people and places. Please take a moment of your time to learn about the LongHunter, one of the most important of the Frontiersmen in my opinion, and also one dear to my heart as my ancestor was a LongHunter.
In America's early Southwestern Frontier, large parties of men were organized for the purpose of hunting game and exploring in the country west of the mountains, and were afterwards called "Long Hunters" because of the length of time they were away.
The Long Hunter was peculiar to the Southwest only, and nowhere else on any frontier did such hunts ever originate...When the pioneer settler moved toward the extreme frontier, he had long since been preceded by the long hunter. There is no braver lot than these early hunters. Not only did they endure the rigorous winters in crude shelters but the danger of sickness, privation, exposure, hunting accidents,etc...
